The question everyone starts with. A short cheat sheet — add your own experience in the replies.
| Board | When to choose it | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| ESP32 DevKit (WROOM-32) | First project, most articles and libraries | The most GPIOs, Bluetooth Classic, but bigger |
| ESP32-C3 SuperMini | Small battery sensors | Only ~13 GPIOs, one ADC, BLE only |
| ESP32-S3 DevKitC | Camera, displays, USB devices, AI | PSRAM, native USB; a bit pricier |
| Arduino Uno / Nano | Learning without Wi-Fi, 5 V logic | Little memory, no Wi-Fi |
Our advice
- Not sure — an ESP32 DevKit with 30 or 38 pins. Most examples on this site are written for it.
- Running on a battery — ESP32-C3: lower deep-sleep current and tiny.
- Need a camera or a large display — ESP32-S3 with PSRAM.

You can try any of these boards without buying — the simulator has a board switch.
